From growing up in the small town of Framlingham, Suffolk, to selling out shows at Wembley Stadium, Edward Christopher Sheeran's path to stardom has been anything but ordinary. Born on February 17, 1991 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, Sheeran spent nearly the entire duration of his childhood singing in a local church choir and working tirelessly at improving his skill with the guitar. After attending a Damien Rice concert at the impressionable age of eleven, Ed Sheeran was finally sold on the idea of following his passion: music.
Sheeran began recording his own songs in 2004, carefully crafting five independently-released "EPs" before finally hitting the mainstream with his debut studio album "+" in 2011. The album featured six unique singles, with "The A Team", "You Need Me, I Don't Need You", and "Lego House" leading the pack, and clearly showcasing the diversity of this breakthrough artist. As of June 2015, "Plus" had sold nearly 2 million copies in the United Kingdom alone, ranking as the sixth best-selling album of the 2010s.
Oftentimes, when an artist produces a best-selling album, his or her subsequent effort suffers from what can most commonly be defined as a "sophomore slump". In 2014, however, Ed Sheeran's second studio album "X" would send him into a realm of unprecedented success. The Grammy award-winning "Album of the Year", featuring a broad range of songs, from upbeat tracks such as "Don't" and "Sing", to ballads such as "Thinking Out Loud" and "Photograph", propelled Sheeran to a level of global success that he could have never imagined.
With the worldwide tour coming to an end, and the "Multiply" hype finally dying down, Ed Sheeran took to social media on December 13, 2015 to announce that he would be avoiding his phone for a while in an effort to refrain from "seeing the world through a screen". While it may have been a cold and lonely year for some, Sheeran's return on December 13, 2016 (exactly a year later) was met with immeasurable jubilation.
On January 6, 2017, Ed Sheeran released two brand new singles, sweeping the globe with "Shape Of You" and "Castle On The Hill". His third studio album "÷" followed merely two months later, along with the release of a third eclectic single, "Galway Girl". Once again, Sheeran had "hit a home run", topping the charts in fourteen different countries with sixteen fantastically diverse songs.
Although his successes may be too broad to properly address, the sky remains the limit for twenty-six-year-old Ed Sheeran. In addition to his remarkable popularity as an artist, Sheeran keeps himself busy with his own record label, "Gingerbread Man Records". This label was launched in August 2015, much to the excitement of Sheeran's first two signees, Jamie Lawson and Foy Vance.
