Game #2: San Francisco Giants @ Milwaukee Brewers (04/05/2016)
Following a monumental Opening Day victory, the San Francisco Giants entered Miller Park on Tuesday evening in hopes of extending their winning streak by flexing their offensive muscles once more.
However, this evening's contest proved to be unlike yesterday afternoon's high-scoring affair in that it quickly turned into a pitching duel between San Francisco's Johnny Cueto and Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson.
The first six batters for the black and orange were unable to reach base this evening, as the Giants began to realize that their offensive prowess would not become the focal point of the game.
Backed by their newly-acquired pitcher, San Francisco would enter the third inning trailing (for the second consecutive day) by the score of 1-0.
Nevertheless, this one tally, notched on a rather disappointing double-play ball, would be the first and last score for the Milwaukee Brewers on this particular evening.
In the top of the third, Giants' shortstop Brandon Crawford stepped up to the plate, received an appetizing pitch from Jimmy Nelson, and smashed it out of the yard.
Courtesy of more solid pitching from Cueto, and a beautiful play at the plate fashioned by Brandon Crawford and Buster Posey, the teams entered the fourth inning deadlocked at 1.
Then, after a wild sequence in which Joe Panik, Buster Posey, and Hunter Pence stood upon all three bases with no outs recorded in the fourth inning, the Giants managed a single run on a ground-ball by Matt Duffy.
The always-important early go-ahead run. And that would complete the evening's scoring.
Johnny Cueto wouldn't allow a single base-runner in the bottom of the fourth or fifth, and merely two in the sixth and seventh innings combined.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Nelson would allow nothing in the fifth or seventh inning, and a lone single in the sixth.
Cueto would finish with a line of 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 Ks, and 96 pitches thrown, whilst Nelson would conclude with 7.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 Ks, and 88 pitches thrown.
As the game drew nearer to its conclusion, the Giants would preserve their 2-1 advantage with yet another remarkable performance from their bullpen.
In the eighth, Sergio Romo received his first action of the young season, and recorded a "1-2-3" inning.
And in the bottom of the ninth, Giants' closer Santiago Casilla forced Ryan Braun to pop-up, Jonathan Lucroy to strikeout, and Chris Carter to strikeout, as San Francisco emerged victoriously yet again.
The Giants will seek to sweep the Brewers tomorrow morning with newcomer Jeff Samardzija atop the hill.
FINAL SCORE: Giants 2, Brewers 1.
