Film Review #8: Reminders of Him

"I should probably go."

"You should probably stay."

Colleen Hoover's Reminders of Him tells the story of Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe), a young woman who seeks to reconnect with her daughter after serving a prison sentence.

Warning: there are spoilers ahead.

After pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter for an accident resulting in the death of her boyfriend, Scotty Landry, Kenna is forced to spend half a decade in prison.

Upon her release, she moves back to her hometown in hopes of finally meeting her five-year-old daughter Diem, who is being raised by Scotty's parents.

Kenna ultimately stumbles into a bar where she finally meets Ledger Ward (Tyriq Withers), Scotty's lifelong best friend who was an NFL player during their relationship.

When Ledger realizes Kenna's true identity, he is furious -- blaming her for Scotty's death, he refuses to introduce her to Diem.

However, a series of flashbacks soon reveal that Scotty's death was, indeed, an accident. Thus, Kenna has nothing to atone for.

Despite (or perhaps due to) their shared grief, there is palpable chemistry between Kenna and Ledger, and he is eventually able to convince Scotty's parents to allow Kenna to meet her daughter.

My rating? 7 out of 10.

I'm not under the impression that this movie does anything to reinvent the wheel.

Many of the common romantical tropes are present: the predictable "enemies to lovers", "will they, won't they" -- it's all been done before.

With that said, we could have easily seen an effort worthy of the Hallmark Channel.

However, in my estimation, this film exceeds the benchmark set by Hoover's 2025 adaptation of Regretting You.

There is a certain endearing quality present in the relationships between characters here (notably Kenna and Lady Diana / Ledger and Diem) that makes this film palatable even for those who are not fond of the genre.

Furthermore, Reminders of Him thrives on a stellar soundtrack (who doesn't love "Yellow" by Coldplay?) and a surprise appearance by Lainey Wilson, my new favorite grocery store employee.
