Giants Need Minor Miracle on Sunday

Following heartbreaking losses on Thursday and Friday, the San Francisco Giants (29-29) entered Saturday evening's matchup with their postseason fate still in their own hands.

Unfortunately for the Giants, that is no longer the case.

Despite a solid outing from Johnny Cueto, San Francisco's offense was unable to produce on Saturday.

After the Giants finally tallied a pair of runs in the eighth inning, the Padres countered with three in the ninth en route to a lopsided 6-2 victory.

Although San Francisco is technically tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the National League's 8-seed (at 29-30), Milwaukee owns the tiebreaker heading into the final day of the regular season.

In other words: for the Giants to qualify for the 2020 MLB Playoffs on Sunday, they must win and the Brewers must lose.

There is a small silver lining for San Francisco in considering the status of the St. Louis Cardinals (29-28).

If the Cardinals lose to the Brewers tomorrow, their season isn't over -- instead, St. Louis will fly to Detroit to make up one or two postponed/canceled games.

Should the Giants and Brewers both win on Sunday, there is a small possibility for the Tigers to win a pair of games in Monday's double-header, eliminate the Cardinals (who would fall to 29-31), and allow the Giants into the 2020 MLB Playoffs.

Feeling confused yet?

Bottom line: even if the Giants win tomorrow, they will need help for their season to continue.

While it is frustrating to consider being eliminated by virtue of a tiebreaker rule, this team has had numerous chances to secure their positioning in recent weeks and failed to capitalize each time.

San Francisco now holds a record of 2-7 against San Diego this season.

The Giants will hand the ball to Drew Smyly (3.38 ERA) in their season finale on Sunday.

First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 PM PST.
